The highly anticipated all-new D-Max has finally arrived in South Africa and Isuzu took to the roads between the Eastern and Western Cape to show off the vast improvements on this new model. Of course, the trip was not limited to the (relatively) good condition of our national roads but also deviated to ridged B-roads and sandy gravel roads to emphasize this bakkie’s upgraded levels of refinement, quality, technology, and efficiency.
Manufacturing South African bakkies since 1978
Isuzu has been manufacturing bakkies in Mzansi since 1978, establishing what would become one of the most standout vehicles in our country’s car market. The fact that they invested R1.2 billion in 2019 showed that they are here to stay to continue their 4 decade long legacy and raise the bar even higher for the brand.
A family of 24
The line-up of the new D-Max consist of a whopping 24 models, including single cabs, 11 different double cab models as well as extended cabs.
The D-Max V-Cross is the top of the range flagship model for the brand that sports features like a 9” touchscreen for the infotainment system, dual-zone air conditioning, leather seats with eight-way power adjustment, Isuzu's latest active driving safety features and eight airbags.
The strong and rugged exterior is next level and combines the signature toughness of a bakkie with the sleek, modern urban charisma of a passenger car.
Adapted features on the new V-Cross include the grille, fender flares, door handles, mirror caps, and roof rails, all finished in gun-metallic paint. In addition, the V-Cross comes with a hooped sports bar for added athletic appeal.
4x4 and 4x2
The V-Cross 4x4 comes standard with Isuzu's 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine producing 140kW and 450Nm. Power is channelled to the road via a six-speed automatic gearbox. (There are non-V-Cross models available with manual transmission as well.)
If you’re wondering if the V-Cross is also available in 4x2, the answer is yes, and it comes at a slightly lower price point than the 4X4.
By the way, there is also a second engine being a 1.9-litre turbodiesel, available on all other models, except the V-Cross. This unit produces 110kW and 350Nm. Both engines are available with both transmissions and in 4x4 and 4x2.
So much to love
There is just so much to love in the all new Isuzu D-Max bakkie. We haven’t even gotten to the excellent riding quality, thanks to the 3 suspension setups - soft, medium, hard, or the network of safety features that operate automatically and independently, working tirelessly to protect you.
Worth the wait
The new D-Max bakkie was definitely worth the wait and lives up to every high expectation we had. It’s not only a major upgrade compared to its predecessor technically but it also looks much better.
We even dare to say the D-Max is one of the most attractive bakkies currently on sale and we are sure it will win over the hearts of many South African bakkie lovers in the near future!
